In the 2021 season, I stewarded a crop of Peruvian corn known as Maiz Morado. Known as ‘purple corn’, this is classified as a Morado Canteño, which is an Incipient Race. “Morado Canteño has been strongly selected to maintain the cherry plant and pericarp color of Cuzco Morado, which is primarily derrived from K'culli" (Grobman Et al., 1962).

Maiz Morado is incredibly versatile as a flour corn, for making a Peruvian drink called Chicha Morada, or as a fabric dye.
